Tiller Money Review | The Ascent

What is Tiller and how does it work?

If you enjoy creating spreadsheets, Tiller Money might be the budgeting app for you. That is, if you’re not looking for a mobile app. Tiller was originally intended as a mobile app, but after interviews with potential customers, the developers decided that the spreadsheet layout would work better on a desktop.

While it is possible to access Tiller Sheets from your iOS or Android device (using the Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel app), it can be difficult to update from your mobile device.

Tiller Money connects your online financial accounts. Every day your investment balances and banking transactions – including deposits and withdrawals – are automatically retrieved and uploaded to Google or Excel spreadsheet software (whichever you use). So you always know where you stand. And to make your life even easier, the company sends you an email every day to keep you updated.

Not only does Tiller keep track of daily expenses and help you stay on budget, but it also oversees your debt settlement strategy. It all starts with linking Tiller with your bank accounts, credit cards and investments.

Once your accounts are linked, Tiller will automatically categorize the transactions for you or you can categorize them yourself. If you want specific expense categories, you have the option to include them.

One interesting thing that Tiller allows you to do is break up transactions into more than one category. For example, let’s say you pick up groceries and school supplies for the children in the same store. With the Tiller Splitter add-on you can split the expenses into different categories. For example, you might want one half to appear under Groceries and the other half under Education.

Tiller has a “Build Your Own” feature that allows you to create your own templates and financial reports. One of the best things about Tiller is the growing number of free personal finance templates. The nice thing about this free template library is that you can test different templates until you find the one that works for you.

Finally, Tiller makes it easy to share your records. This can come in handy when working with an accountant around tax time.
